Clipart and Images
The Internet has made it increasingly easy to locate, save, print, copy, and re-use images; however, many online images are protected by copyright and cannot legally be downloaded and re-used.  Here are some helpful sites for you to use to locate free (and legal) images!
  • Creative Commons: Here you can read about creative commons licensing, a method of copyrightingimages while allowing others to use them. Many of the following sites contain images that are protected under a creative commons license.
  • Flickr: This photosharing site contains personal images from users all over the world. Use the advanced search feature to search strictly within creative commons content.
  • Wikimedia Commons: A repository for shared media, this site contains video, audio files, and much more, in addition to images.
  • Encyclopedia of Life: Although this site is intended as an informational database on all of earth’s living species, it serves as a great place to find pictures of animals and other organisms.
  • Discovery Clip Art Gallery: Specifically designed for teachers, this site categorizes colorful clip art into school subjects and other related areas. Images on this site are subject to copyright restrictions; however, teachers are free to use them as long as they are attributed correctly.
  • Phillip Martin: This site shares colorful cartoon drawings, free to those who attribute them to the artist. Images categories include Geography, Family, Science, The Arts, Language Arts, Sports, and many, many more.
  • Pics 4 Learning: “A copyright-friendly image library for teachers and students,” Pics 4 Learning contains images related to several school subjects, as well as a user-friendly tutorial on how to use the site.
